As stated in an official Call of Duty blog post, “The all-new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 comes out later this year.” This shoots down talks that the next Warzone game isn’t going to be available until 2023. Unfortunately, Infinity Ward confirmed to CharlieIntel that Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 aren’t releasing together. Then again, with only a little over two months to go before the year ends, Warzone 2 isn’t that far behind anyway. If Activision Blizzard is feeling a bit festive, it could take advantage of the upcoming holiday season and drop Warzone 2.0 right in the middle of Christmas, which would effectively secure it a huge playerbase right off the bat. Modern Warfare 2’s first official trailer did a great job in tiding audiences over for the second-most highly anticipated Call of Duty sequel in recent memory. 2019’s Modern Warfare, also by Infinity Ward, is still the best-selling Call of Duty to date. However, Modern Warfare 2 will have to play “second fiddle” to Warzone 2, which is the follow-up to Activision Blizzard’s late but-still highly successful foray into the battle royale genre. Now, Activision Blizzard, as well as the dozens of studios helping out on Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, are hoping that the pair of sequels can see similar success once they hit the market later this year. Speaking of Call of Duty, audiences can look forward to more Modern Warfare 2 footage at the Summer Game Fest on June 9. Also, as we just found out, Treyarch has “big plans” for zombies. This might hint at Zombies becoming a standalone experience separate from the Call of Duty franchise. If true, Treyarch’s next Zombies game could fill the void left as Call of Duty skips 2023 to prepare for the next installment by Sledgehammer Games.
