The film was a massive success as it pulled in $216.6 million in the global box office against a relatively modest $18 million budget. This also resulted in lucrative paydays for both stars; Schwarzenegger and DeVito agreed beforehand to take 20% of the film’s box office returns instead of their usual fees. Yet, despite the success of the movie, a sequel never materialized, which was unusual given the time it was released. Since then, Schwarzenegger and DeVito have gone on to star in other films. However, many decades later, it appears that both are reprising their roles in an aptly titled sequel, Triplets.

Has Triples already started filming?

Talks of a sequel to the 1988 movie started back in March 2012 with Eddie Murphy tapped to play the role of the pair’s third twin. However, in 2015, Universal announced that it had put the film on hold. Then, in 2018, Schwarzenegger confirmed that the script for Triplets was already ready. After another four years, the filming of the highly anticipated sequel is finally set to start in 2022. Ivan Reitman will direct a cast that now suddenly sees Tracy Morgan displacing Murphy as the long-lost third brother. Deadline confirmed the addition of the Saturday Night Live alum to the movie, with Reitman adding that Morgan will now play the role of the third Benedict brother due to Eddie Murphy’s busy schedule. The 60-year-old comedian most recently starred in 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name and 2021’s Coming 2 America, another sequel to a classic comedy film. Murphy is scheduled to star alongside Jonah Hill in another comedy movie for Netflix. Morgan most recently starred in Coming 2 America alongside Eddie Murphy. The Emmy Award nominee currently plays a key role in the TBS comedy, The Last O.G. He is also the executive producer of the said show alongside Jordan Peele and Keenen Ivory Wayans. According to Reitman, the plan is to start production in 2022 in Boston. He adds that he’ll treat the project like an indie film, similar to how he approached the original Twins movie. It will be interesting to see how modern audiences receive a movie that follows up on a film that was released way before the time of a vast majority of viewers. If it’s any consolation, DeVito and Schwarzenegger has remained at the forefront of the entertainment industry. The former was part of 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level and is a mainstay in FXX comedy sitcom, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the latter returned to acting as he reprised his iconic role as an aged T-800 in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate. Hopefully, bringing the two back together and throwing Morgan into the mix makes for an amazing time that audiences of all ages will enjoy.
