While we still know very little about the movie itself, a few key details have been confirmed, and at CinemaCon the flick’s title has been revealed as well - alongside some surprise footage exclusively shown to attendees. The Matrix Resurrections, as it will be called, is going to be the fourth main installment of the franchise following the main trilogy and the Animatrix spin-off. While only attendees of CinemaCon were privy to the preview footage, nobody had to sign any NDAs, so reactions and verbal descriptions have been shared.
Warner Bros. presented what was essentially a sizzle reel of very rapidly cut moments from The Matrix Resurrections’ action scenes, so not much of the story has been spoiled for those who saw it - it’s just a short teaser. A few brief scenes of story also appeared, but out of context - Neo meets with a doctor played by Neil Patrick Harris, and also has a run in with Trinity. Lana Wachowski is writing and directing Resurrections without the involvement of Lilly Wachowski this time around, and very few details about the story have been revealed so far. Apparently it is going to be a “love story” with time travel elements, but no going back into the past - so Resurrections won’t be doing any retcons as far as the story is concerned. The protagonist, Neo, will once again be played by Keanu Reeves, who will be joined by returning actresses Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe. Other roles will be filled with newcomers, such as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking the role of Morpheus, who will once again offer a choice between a blue and a red pill. As one of the most recognizable sci-fi series in film, The Matrix has quite the reputation to uphold even though the two sequels of the original, Reloaded and Revolutions released to immense criticism, and to this day many only consider the first film and Animatrix to be any good - their cultural impact cannot be denied. We’ll have to wait and see whether Resurrections turns out to be more like the first or more like the sequels, but the excitement surrounding it is major. We should be seeing a trailer for The Matrix Resurrections soon, as the movie will premiere this year, on the 22nd of December in theatres and on HBO Max.
