After being mentioned in a report last year, Naughty Dog finally confirmed in June that a remake of The Last of Us is in the works and it’s coming out this month.
Several weeks of teases, trailers, and criticism later, which includes one developer defending the project from claims that it was nothing more than a cash grab, The Last of Us Part 1 is finally only days away from launching. Now that the embargo has lifted, critics are allowed to say their piece about the remake of what can only be described as a gaming masterpiece. If nothing else, what they’re saying is exactly what’s expected: The Last of Us Part 1 is an unnecessary remake. But, many are in agreement that the improvements to the 2013 title are more than welcome. The Last of Us already looks great on the PS4 Pro and the PS5, but The Last of Us Part 1 takes things many steps further. The lighting, textures, animations, weapons, and even the AI, have all been overhauled. Here’s a round-up of the scores that critics gave The Last of Us Part 1:
Inverse - 10/10 GameSpot - 8/10 VG247 - 5/5 NME - 5/5 Game Rant - 4.5/5 Digital Trends - 4.5/5 Games Radar - 4/5
Unfortunately, The Last of Us Part 1 doesn’t include multiplayer. This isn’t a deal-breaker for most, but it’s one of the original title’s most underrated features. The good news is that the next game in the franchise is multiplayer-only. Speaking of what’s next for The Last of Us, the PS5 remake is coming to a PC at a later date. We can only assume that this will be received positively. At the same time, it would go a long way toward helping the console manufacturer achieve its lofty goal of $300 million in PC port sales for the current fiscal year. Also, fans of the narrative-driven franchise can look forward to HBO’s live-action adaptation that’s coming out next year. The cable TV giant just released a teaser for HBO’s The Last of Us and it was nothing short of glorious.
