Sony’s Uncharted movie is finally here

Just less than 24 hours ago, a low-quality clip featuring a few seconds of footage straight from the Uncharted trailer went viral. Whether its release had something to do with the surprise trailer launch or not, we’re thankful either way. The live-action adaptation of Uncharted will star Tom Holland in a younger version of the thrill-seeking treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, in a series of events set long before the events of the video games. This explains how much younger Holland’s Nathan appears compared to the more seasoned look of his video game counterpart. What is perhaps more jarring is Holland’s accent for Nathan, which is far too similar to his Spider-Man voice in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films where he stars as a teenager. With that said, the rest of the trailer does a fairly good job at selling Sony’s Uncharted film, and Sony will have a few more chances to convince fans that this video game adaptation is well worth watching ahead of its premiere date in February 2022. One key selling point of the Uncharted movie is that a lot of the action looks a lot like the source material. There’s a big plane set piece that was featured in the leaked Uncharted clip that went viral earlier and it looks a lot like it was taken straight out of 2011’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Of course, the Uncharted series is more than just the Nathan Drake show. One of the franchise’s biggest strengths is the interesting if eclectic supporting cast. Naturally, the movie will breathe life into some of the game’s most memorable characters, including Nathan’s father figure and partner, Sully, who will be played by Mark Wahlberg. There’s also Sophia Taylor Ali’s young Chloe Frazer, who, for some reason, is acquaintances with Sully in the movie. Regardless of what’s your stand on the live-action adaptation of Uncharted, you can’t help but give Sony props. This movie has been in development for over a decade, with Wahlberg originally set to play Drake himself. In addition to the Uncharted feature film, another live-action adaptation of a Naughty Dog video game is in the works. The award-winning PlayStation first-party studio is working closely with HBO on a TV show based on The Last of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively. There’s no word yet as to when HBO’s The Last of Us will release, but we did get our first look at the show’s eerily-accurate Joel and Ellie a few months back. As for Uncharted, the Holland-led movie is set to hit theaters on February 18, 2022.
