Today, we received more details after Bungie unveiled Lightfall as the next major expansion headed to Destiny 2 in its recently concluded annual showcase event. According to Bungie, the penultimate expansion as the “beginning of the end” of the epic 9-part saga. The new DLC will bring players to a new location and confront an enemy that has played a key role in the many conflicts that we have seen in Destiny 2. The nearly 36-minute-long showcase also revealed some of the new features coming to the online-only FPS title.
What is the story of Lightfall?
Lightfall takes place in a new location, Neomuna, on the planet Neptune. Here, an alternate version of humanity has resided since the Collapse. The new map is a bustling cyberpunk-looking metropolis with its skyscrapers and neon lights. The primary antagonist of the expansion, The Witness, has had a hand in many events in Destiny 2. A familiar foe, Emperor Calus, also returns as the enforcer of The Witness as he commands an army of loyalists called the Shadow Legion. In addition to this, Lightfall will introduce a new enemy type, Tormentors, which wield large scythes and can close a large gap in an instant. Neomuna is also home to a new faction called the Cloud Striders who protect the city. The said warriors are similar to the Guardians in design and will most likely play a major part in the conflict.
New Guardians
We can see a new Guardian subclass called the Strand in the Lightfall trailer. This subclass is a user of poison and can harness the power of Darkness. With the psychic-based powers of the Strand, each of the main classes will gain a new set of abilities. For example, the Warlock can now throw green projectiles. Meanwhile, the Titan can materialize large claw weapons as the Hunter uses a rope dart that it can manipulate. It also appears that the Guardians can use a grappling hook of sorts to move past obstacles.
Other gameplay updates
Lightfall will bring back the Legendary Campaign for the best of players to test their mettle. The new Guardian ranks can help players gain mastery of the game. Destiny 2 will also implement a “Looking for Group” system to help solo or new players find teammates to play with. The LFG system also helps players progress through the difficult parts of Destiny 2 that are best played with a group. Players can also rate their gameplay experience with other players through the Guardian Commendation system. Bungie wants players to use this system to show their appreciation for each other and get to know others better.
