The first of a series of spinoffs from Star Wars: The Mandalorian, many longtime fans of the saga are anxiously looking forward to the show. While Boba Fett is a staple of the galaxy far, far away, the bounty hunter has had very little appearances or use outside of Expanded Universe (now called Legends) continuity. What does the new teaser for The Book of Boba Fett revealed prior to its launch?

The legend returns

Titled “Reign”, the teaser opens with what appears to be Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) escorting a captive into the palace of Jabba the Hutt. Fans will recall that the end credits of The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale had Boba Fett and Fennec Shand taking over the deceased crime boss’s Tatooine abode after executing Jabba’s former aide, Bib Fortuna.

It is unclear who these are, but the scene does appear to take place in the infamous Mos Eisley spaceport. We then see a helper droid handing Boba Fett’s familiar Mandalorian helmet. What follows is a quick cut of events taking place in the underworld of Tatooine. The teaser shows a few more scenes not in the first trailer. It culminates with Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) at the head of the table, flanked by Gamorrean guards, along with what are possibly high ranking members of the criminal empire left by Jabba Desilijic Tiure. It then leads to a shot of the bounty hunter and new head of the syndicate on the throne declaring “I am Boba Fett”. The next couple of shots reveal Boba Fett and Fennec Shand in battle with warriors armed with hand-carried energy shields. The teaser ends with Boba Fett’s infamous Slave 1 ship rocketing into space. Based on the details revealed in the two teasers so far, it is likely that there will be a faction war within the criminal organization. Given that Bib Fortuna had taken over after Jabba the Hutt was slain by Princess Leia Organa, other leaders would not simply allow Boba Fett to take over. However, with Slave 1’s trek into space, it would imply the conflict will not be limited to the sands of Tatooine.

The past is catching up

It should be noted that the Hutt clan signed a treaty to use the hyperspace lanes with the Galactic Republic before the time of the Empire. This was facilitated by the rescue of Jabba’s son Rotta thanks to Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano. These events transpired in Star Wars: The Clone Wars 2008 film. With Ahsoka Tano (starring Rosario Dawson) also in development, could this have an impact on The Book of Boba Fett show? Could Rotta reappear and attempt to take over the criminal empire his father once led? Given Dave Filoni’s involvement and efforts to bring the past elements from Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels into live action, this could be a very likely plot development. Speaking of the past, Boba Fett’s history is one of the most unexplored territory in Star Wars lore. Other than books and novels (which are now mostly non-canon after Disney took over Lucasfilm), the most feared bounty hunter’s early life is largely left to speculation. And what about Fennec Shand? Although her past is briefly touched on in the animated Star Wars: The Bad Batch, there is still a lot of unanswered questions about the mercenary’s origins. Could The Book of Boba Fett touch on his early years after Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones? After all, you cannot have a legend returning without showing how that legend came to be in the first place. And given the title is The Book of Boba Fett, chapters that flashback to his unexplored past is all but guaranteed. But we are all hoping it doesn’t reference the horrible Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Mandalorian Season 2.5?

And what about his connection with The Mandalorian? As it was announced earlier by showrunners John Favreau and Dave Filoni, The Book of Boba Fett serves as a season 2.5 of the popular show that helped usher in a new era for the Star Wars franchise after the mixed results of the sequel trilogy. What could be the ramifications of Boba Fett taking over Jabba’s underworld to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his own troubles, especially with his separation from Grogu and being the keeper of the Darksaber? Will other Mandalorians be appearing on The Book of Boba Fett? Disney and Lucasfilm’s official Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett synopsis reads: Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen. Executive produced by Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Robert Rodriguez, Colin Wilson, and Kathleen Kennedy, the Disney+ exclusive series arrives on the streaming service this December 29, 2021.
