According to Deadline, No Way Home, which beat Avatar for the third spot at the domestic US box office, sold over 2.1 million units in its first week of digital release in the United States, a figure that amounts to $42 million. As fun as it was to watch No Way Home in theaters, the digital release might feature the film’s definitive version. After seeing Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange get roped into the antics of Holland’s Spider-Man along with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as their respective Spider-Man variants, Marvel Studios still had to cut a handful of scenes from the movie’s theatrical version despite the lengthy runtime. This is perhaps what drove fans to throw their money at Marvel Studios and Sony’s third collaborative Spider-Man film after promising at least 80 minutes of bonus content. It’s amazing just how big No Way Home has become when you consider that its status as an MCU film was once in limbo. There was a time following 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home that Sony and Marvel were at an impasse regarding the future of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thankfully, Holland made a few drunk calls to the right people that ultimately led to the film’s creation. More importantly, it appears that No Way Home has opened the doors for Sony to pursue its Spider-Man films, with reports of Andrew Garfield reprising his role for a third outing as part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. The only bad takeaway from No Way Home’s achievement is that we’ll have to wait for a while to see Holland come back to the big screen. After establishing himself as a box office draw with Marvel Studios, Holland cemented his status with the live-action adaptation of Uncharted and now he’s all but expected to come back as Nathan Drake in a sequel. With the MCU set to explore other pockets of its cinematic universe for the next year or two, we wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t end up seeing Holland until the next Avengers film. Speaking of the future of Disney’s live-action comic book adaptations, the next few months are going to be big for Marvel fans. Oscar Isaac will make his highly anticipated debut as Moon Knight on March 30 with Cumberbatch coming back as Dr. Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6. Sony is also dropping Morbius on April after multiple delays, but judging by the reviews so far, things aren’t looking good for the Jared Leto-led sci-fi thriller.
