Yet, despite the ongoing success of The Last of Us Part 2, it seems like Sony has decided to give the game a substantial price cut on the PlayStation Store.

Is The Last of Us Part 2 price cut permanent?

The Last of Us Part 2 sees a continuation of Joel and Ellie’s journey throughout the post-apocalyptic United States that has been ravaged by an ongoing pandemic. While The Last of Us Part 2 won the hearts of critics and audiences alike, there remains a huge divide among gamers who have yet to try out the game, primarily due to the negative publicity that the game received before and after it was launched. Much of the controversy revolved around the game’s heavy reliance on violence. The Last of Us 2 remains just as “violent” as ever, but it is more affordable, which should give skeptics yet another reason to try it out. What is the most interesting part here is that The Last of Us Part 2 isn’t just any game. It’s one of the games that, as we’ve learned from the Epic v. Apple trial, Microsoft wishes that it had for Xbox consoles. It’s also one of the biggest AAA titles to ever release and it would have been justifiable to keep it at its original retail price forever. As such, it is surprising that Sony and Naughty Dog decided to give The Last of Us 2 a $20 price cut. In comparison, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is still sitting at a $60 price point despite releasing just a few months earlier in April 2020. It also has had a director’s cut of sorts release in Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, which would’ve explained a permanent price cut. For The Last of Us 2 to receive a price cut this late and as large as it did has fans curious as to whether it means something bigger is coming soon. Surprisingly enough, the price cut is only available in the United States version of the PlayStation Store. The UK version still has The Last of Us 2 at its original price point. If there is an update coming to The Last of Us 2, a price cut would somewhat make sense. Fans have been waiting for Naughty Dog to release a multiplayer mode for the game. Making it cheaper helps make it accessible if that is the case. Not to mention, The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the few AAA exclusives to release last year that doesn’t have an official next-gen version. Meanwhile, a Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut and Death Stranding: Director’s Cut are both set to release in the next few months. With Sony rumored to be remaking the original The Last of Us for the PS5 and HBO’s The Last of Us TV series in the works, it will be interesting to see if the price cut means something or this is all much ado about nothing.
