Following the success of the first film, the series’s creator, writer, and director, Rian Johnson signed a contract with Netflix to develop two more films and, after Glass Onion, is contractually obligated to create one more film for the platform. In December, following Glass Onion’s release, the highly sought-after director stated that he was “just starting to figure out what the next one is going to be.” Now, only a few weeks after the film’s release, Johnson has confirmed he is already writing the script for the next installment. Johnson made this revelation during an interview with Variety where he discussed his attempts to recreate the genius of the Agatha Christie-detective thrillers Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. In the interview, the Star Wars director revealed that the Knives Out series feels like one of the most exciting things in the world to him. He stated that he and his crew focus primarily on keeping the films entertaining and do not have to replicate the previous films. He further said that he has begun work on the third film and plans to proceed in a different direction from the first two films tonally and thematically. In his words, “I’m just trying to find something that I have deep roots in, that I have a deep love of, and get back to the experience of where that love came from. Not by telling audiences, ‘Remember back when we loved these things?’ But by actually trying to remember what my experience was and figure out how the audience can experience that in a fresh way.” Johnson had earlier mentioned that he is working on the film in an interview with Wired, where he discussed his experience with the whodunnit genre. When asked about the timeline of the series, the filmmaker stated, “So much of what I’m trying to do, because I’m starting to write the next one, is really just about trying to clear my head and think about what’s on my mind right now. Hopefully that translates in some way to what’s on all of our minds right now in terms of culture.” Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a mystery film that follows the super detective Benoit Blanc as he attempts to solve a murder mystery involving tech billionaire Miles Bron and his closest friends. The film stars an ensemble cast including Daniel Craig who reprises his role as Benoit Blanc. The other members of the cast include Janelle Monae, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr. Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline. By the way, the film confirmed Blanc’s sexuality as it introduced his partner played by British actor Hugh Grant. Glass Onion and Knives Out are currently streaming on Netflix.
