This news comes courtesy of Deadline, which reports Radio Silence will direct and produce the film alongside The Picture Company’s cofounders Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman. It’s also been revealed that Steve Asbell and J.R. Young will supervise the project for 20th Century Studios. John Carpenter, who created the film, will serve as executive producer. At the moment, there’s no writer attached to the project. However, the production company is currently working to ensure the role isn’t vacant for much longer. Radio Silence is an American directing team that was formed in 2011. At its inception, the team comprised four filmmakers, namely Justin Martinez, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella. Martinez, however, left the group after a few years with the team having only directed three films V/H/S, Devil’s Due, and Southbound. Since his exit, Radio Silence has gone on to work on many other projects, including Ready or Not, Scream, Phobias, V/H/S/94, and V/H/S/99. They are also working on several projects including Scream 6, V/H/S/85, and the Escape from New York reboot. The team was hired for the latter due to their success in restarting the Scream franchise. Carpenter is a filmmaker, actor, and composer who has worked across multiple film genres, including horror, action, and science fiction. Carpenter has created and produced plenty of box office projects, including the Halloween series, Escape from New York, Escape from L.A., Assault on Precinct 13, and In the Mouth of Madness. The 74-year-old filmmaker is famous for serving as composer or co-composer on a majority of his films’ music and he has won a Saturn Award for Best Music that validates his composing prowess. He won the award for one of his compositions for the 1998 film Vampires. The original Escape from New York film came out in 1981 and was a commercial success. The film grossed $25.2 million at the box office against a $6 million budget. It takes place in 1977, in a dystopian crime-ridden United States, where a gigantic prison colony is located on Manhattan Island. Carpenter wrote the film alongside Nick Castle to shed more light on the Watergate scandal. Carpenter was also the director of the film with Debra Hill and Larry J. Franco serving as the producers. Escape from New York follows Lieutenant S. D. Snake Plissken, a federal prisoner and former Special Forces soldier, who strikes a deal with a police commissioner to rescue the United States President from a powerful crime group. If he succeeded in retrieving the president within 24 hours, he would be granted a full presidential pardon and released from prison. However, failure to rescue the president would almost certainly result in his death. The movie had Kurt Russell as Plissken and Lee Van Cleef as the police commissioner. Apart from Russell, the film also had Ernest Borgnine as Cabbie, Donald Pleasence as President John Harker, Isaac Hayes as The Duke, Harry Deal Stanton as Harold Brain Hellman, and Adrienne Barbeau as Maggie. At the moment, there’s no information if Russell will play any part in the film. However, it is early stages and more information will come to light as things progress. In other entertainment news, there are reports that Fast and Furious 10’s budget is getting out of control. Also, Thor actor Chris Hemsworth revealed in a recent interview that he will reprise the character if Marvel completes and closes out its story. By the way, Radio Silence’s next installment in the Scream series is scheduled for a March 10, 2023 release while V/H/S/85 will premiere sometime in 2023.
