Since then, Bethesda has released the game for the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, as well as VR headsets. However, Rockstar Games has ported Grand Theft Auto 5 nearly just as many times. Rockstar Games first released the latest GTA title on the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013. A year later, PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions were made available. Now, the next-gen version of the game is scheduled to release on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, with fans also asking for a Switch port. By the end of 2021, Rockstar Games will have ported GTA 5 over to at least seven different consoles and three console generations. With that said, while the release date for the next-gen version of GTA 5 has been confirmed along with next-gen exclusive vehicle upgrades, the affable but coy Rockstar Games has wisely kept other, more specific details about the upcoming version of their 2013 title under wraps. Worry not though, because as secretive as Rockstar Games is, there’s nothing that determined data miners cannot uncover.
Dataminers find evidence of cross-gen saves support for next-gen GTA 5
According to TezFunz2 on Twitter, popular data miner alloc8or has found what appears to be clues concerning a new feature for GTA 5 on the Xbox Series S/X and the PS5. The feature would let players transfer their single-player save files from the current-gen version of GTA 5 to the next-gen versions and would be a big deal considering that the same thing was not possible when the PS4 and Xbox One ports of GTA 5 were released more than half a decade ago.
— Tez2 (@TezFunz2) July 25, 2021 Technically, Rockstar Games supported cross-gen save transfers from the PS3 and Xbox 360 to the PS4 and Xbox One, respectively. However, the studio eventually discontinued support for this feature because people were modding their save files on the older consoles (which had been hacked) and then transferring them to the PS4 and Xbox One (which were not hacked). The data miners also claim that Rockstar is working on Character Transfer services in preparation for the next-gen version of the latest GTA title.
What’s next for Grand Theft Auto?
Rockstar Games currently has its hands full working on both GTA 5 and GTA 6. However, unlike Bethesda, which confirmed The Elder Scrolls 6 a few years ago, even though the game might not release until after 2022, Rockstar has refused to talk about GTA 6, even if only to confirm or deny that it is in development. At the moment, the only confirmed GTA project is the next-gen version of GTA 5 and the standalone release of GTA Online. Unfortunately, with so little information to go on, all we can do now is wait for Rockstar Games to make an announcement. If it’s any consolation, there are rumors that a PlayStation State of Play event is set to take place in August or September. With Sony and Rockstar’s close partnership, we might hear more then.
