The last Battlefield game, Battlefield 5, was released way back in September 2018, which makes this the longest gap between release so far in the history of the franchise. However, while the annual Battlefield release schedule is sorely missed by franchise supporters, it seems that fans won’t have to wait too long to get a chance to play an all-new Battlefield title. EA recently confirmed in their latest earnings call that the “next Battlefield experience” is slated for a Holiday 2021 release with a reveal scheduled in the coming months. This is, by far, the first time we’ve heard anything about the next Battlefield title since EA CEO Andrew Wilson talked about how the new game will feature a scale that players have never seen before late last year. Wilson reiterated that statement once again by talking about how the new Battlefield game will “take full advantage of the power of next-generation platforms” and give players a chance to do battle against “more players than ever before”.
The Future of the Battlefield Franchise
To say that the future of the entire franchise rests on the next title is only fitting. Battlefield 5 was met with a lukewarm reception by fans critics alike back in 2018. It spectacularly failed to meet any and all expectations, with subsequent content updates failing to salvage the game’s reputation, with updates ultimately being stopped altogether in 2020. On the other hand, one of Battlefield’s biggest competitors, Call of Duty, is enjoying mainstream appeal. In addition to the unprecedented success of their battle royale game, Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision has enjoyed a lot of success with back-to-back releases in 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
