Mortal Kombat Trailer 2
On the official MKMovie Twitter account, the second Mortal Kombat trailer was released March 25:
— Mortal Kombat Movie (@MKMovie) March 24, 2021 The second trailer has very little new information and scenes. However, it does provide a clearer look at the scenes and character moments from the previous full trailer, with clips from the studio. Quick new shots for Jax, Kano, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang are included. Meanwhile, there are sharper images of previous scenes with Rayden, Sonya, and Goro. There is also a noticeable change to Scorpion’s delivery of the iconic “Get over here!” line, as the initial version received criticism for being too distorted. The trailer also confirms that Mortal Kombat will have an IMAX release for the theatrical version. Meanwhile, the HBO Max version will be available for 31 days on the streaming service. In conjunction with the trailer’s release, the international theatrical poster was also revealed. The theatrical poster features most of the main cast of Mortal Kombat characters appearing in the film.
Where is Johnny Cage?
In addition, 2021’s Mortal Kombat film producer Todd Garner shed some light on why fan favorite and one of the original Mortal Kombat characters Johnny Cage is absent from the film: Garner further elaborates that they wanted a cohesive presentation, focusing on the Asian influences of the Mortal Kombat mythology. The addition of Johnny Cage, the flamboyant martial artist/film actor, as per Gardner’s own words “just felt Hollywood-ish”. Although Johnny Cage will apparently be not appearing in the first film, his inclusion in a potential sequel (depending on the first’s performance) is very likely. This may not assuage diehard fans who feel the film lacks the signature humor of the franchise which Johnny Cage embodies.
Shao Khan and International Release?
The trailer also provides a clearer shot of the structure in the Outworld that depicts Mortal Kombat’s perennial big bad Shao Khan. No word and details have been provided if the Outworld tyrant will be making an actual appearance and role in the new film. Furthermore, there is no additional detail about the international release. The United States will have a simultaneous release for HBO Max and theaters. Overseas, only a theatrical release is set. Unlike the recent hit Zack Snyder’s Justice League which had a release on HBO GO Asia, Binge in Australia, Sky Cinema in the UK, etc., Mortal Kombat will only be available in theaters internationally for the time being. Mortal Kombat stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, Max Huang, and Sisi Stringer. Mortal Kombat is set for release in theaters and the HBO Max service on April 16, 2021.
