James Gunn, who has directed all three of the GotG movies, is moving to DC Studios. It was recently announced that Gunn alongside British producer Peter Safran will be co-heads at DC Studios. Walter Hamada recently stepped down as president of the studio. Reacting to the announcement, Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige expressed his support for Gunn’s new role. In an interview with Deadline at the premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Feige said “Well, he has got a lot of work to do for Marvel between now and May, which he’s well aware of. But after that, I’ll be first in line to see anything he does.”

— Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) October 27, 2022 The hiring of Gunn and Safran to lead DC Studios coincides with Warner Bros’ move to consolidate all DC-related production. DC Studios will be the sole studio working on film, TV, and animation content for the DC. Gunn will reportedly be handling the creative direction for the studio. Safran on the other hand will be leading production and the business side. Gunn’s first DCEU entry was with last year’s The Suicide Squad, which went on to get high praise from critics but didn’t do so well at the global box office. With Gunn and Safran at the helm, the DCEU comes to an end. The announcement for the appointment of the co-CEOs used the term “DC Universe” instead of DC Extended Universe which Warner Bros previously used. Gunn’s tenure with Marvel started in 2012 when he was tapped to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1. The movie was the start of MCU exploring the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. Gunn wrote the screenplay and directed all three movies from the series. The director still has two projects remaining with Marvel Studios. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is coming to Disney+ on November 25, 2022. The Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 will be opening in theaters on May 5, 2023. It will be an interesting time for DC Studios as Black Adam was recently released and has been a commercial success. Fans will also see the return of Aquaman, Shazam, and The Flash next year. Henry Cavill has also recently announced his return as Superman. It has been reported that the sequel to Man of Steel is in the works. Hopefully, Gunn will have the same effect at DC Studios and Warner Bros as Kevin Feige has for the MCU. Gunn will surely bring the experience he has working on the Guardians of the Galaxy to his new role as creative head for DC. Perhaps, we will be seeing a DC and Marvel cross-over in the future.
