What Does the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR Mod Do?
The Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod is made by the same developer behind the Grand Theft Auto 5 VR Mod, Luke Ross. Thus, it applies the same technology and techniques. But, make no mistake, the VR mod for RDR2 is more than just a way to play the game from a first-person perspective. For those who’ve forgotten or might not know, there is already a way to play RDR2 from a first-person perspective without doing any modding. What Ross’ VR mod does is it takes those first-person controls and translates them to a VR headset. This means that you can now play RDR2 via a VR headset, which isn’t possible without a mod. Unfortunately, the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod is only available for single-player right now. But, if it’s any consolation, it’s been proven to work throughout the entirety of the single-player campaign. There are also a few other caveats about the RDR2 VR mod that we’d like to remind you of, including the fact that the game will pull you out of the first-person perspective now and then. Another thing about the RDR2 VR mod is that it’s not compatible with VR motion controllers. This means that, while the mod does let you play the game via a VR headset, you’ll still have to use a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard to play it. Then again, asking for the RDR2 VR mod that’s made by a single developer to support VR motion controllers is a bit too much. Lastly, because Red Dead Redemption 2 involves a lot of horse riding, you might experience motion sickness while playing in VR, so keep that in mind. Ultimately, the small issues don’t detract from the quality of Luke Ross’ work. Even if it requires a fairly powerful PC to run properly, the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod is a welcome change. Those who have a VR headset will, at the very least, want to try it out to see what the fictionalized representation of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States looks like in a virtual setting. Here’s to hoping that the success of the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod forces Rockstar Games to rethink adding official VR support for the game.
