A few months later, Sony confirmed that it’s investing in live-action adaptations of several of its first-party IPs such as God of War, Horizon, Twisted Metal, and Gran Turismo. Now, we just got news of the Gran Turismo movie after three new social media accounts were started for the upcoming project. All three verified accounts feature a brand-new logo for the movie. Check them out on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The film producers made an interesting choice by not using the iconic “GT” logo, and instead opting for a “GRAN TURISMO” logo in a typeface similar to the “PlayStation 3” branding. The “GT” logo has been with the franchise since the first Gran Turismo game launched in 1997. All three social media accounts are inactive and have a very small following. We should see activity from these accounts as more details about the film are released.
What we know so far
The plot of Gran Turismo revolves around a teenager that won a series of Nissan competitions and went on to become a professional racing driver. The plot sounds like it is based on the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a GT player turned professional racing driver. Neill Blomkamp will be directing the film. Blomkamp is known for his work directing science fiction movies such as Elysium, District 9, and Chappie. Joining Blomkamp will be Jason Hall, who will be writing the screenplay for Gran Turismo. Hall is an Academy Award nominee for his work writing the screenplay for American Sniper. It would be interesting to see how Blomkamp and Hall will bring Gran Turismo to the silver screen as the game does not have any narrative. Telling the story of how a gamer turned his passion for Gran Turismo into a professional career is a unique way to adapt the game into a film. Based on the plot, the film will look more like a sports drama along the lines of the critically acclaimed Ford vs Ferrari than a full on video game adaptation like Need for Speed starring Aaron Paul.
Jann Mardenborough
Jann Mardenborough, at age 19 and with no competitive racing experience, entered the GT Academy in 2011. He beat out 90,000 other participants to win the competition and a driver’s seat at Nissan in the Dubai 24-hour race as his prize. He eventually placed third in his class for the race. Mardenborough went on to race in Formula 3 and signed with the Red Bull Junior team under the driver development program. He currently works as a Simulation Driver for the Nissan e.dams Formula E team. Gran Turismo will be coming to theaters on August 11, 2023.
