Daredevil, which came out on the Netflix streaming platform in 2015, had a TV-MA rating, which is equivalent to an R-rated movie. Industry insider Daniel Richtman was asked a question regarding the TV rating for the show. Richtman replied that it is “likely” that Daredevil: Born Again would have a TV-MA rating.

— Daniel Richtman #BlackLivesMatter (@DanielRPK) November 14, 2022 Marvel’s TV shows have played a significant part in helping push the narrative in Phase 4. It doesn’t look like this trend will stop as fans can expect to see even bigger shows slated for Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU. One of the most anticipated TV series coming to Disney+ is Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing in the spring of 2024. It will be a soft reboot of the superhero series which originally came out on Netflix. The Netflix show featuring Charlie Cox as the blind lawyer Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, had a realistic depiction of violence. The show also revolved around the physical and emotional toll of being a crime fighter in Hell’s Kitchen. Having a TV-MA rating allows Marvel to push the narrative of the Daredevil show however they would like without worrying about censorship. It would likely open up the possibility of a return for Jon Bernthal who played Frank Castle in the original show. The Punisher spin-off series on the streaming giant also received a TV-MA rating. Richtman was also asked by fans if Echo, Blade, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, or Thunderbolts would also be getting the mature rating. The insider succinctly replied “No” to the question. Daniel Richtman is one of the most reliable industry insiders on Twitter. He has had a good track record for accurately predicting the details of upcoming movies. He was one of the first to share that the Scarlet Witch would be fighting an X-Men character in the Doctor Strange sequel. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has publicly shared his interest in adding more mature content to the Disney brand. Daredevil: Born Again could be one of the first mature content on the platform. “I want to respect what this brand is,” Chapek shared. “But at the same time, I know that we may be even more precious about what is ‘Disney’ than the consumer base is. If the consumer base has more elasticity, we probably ought to listen to our audience, which means we have more degrees of freedom than we probably thought.” Interestingly, Disney+ added two R-rated Marvel movies to its library. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Logan were recently added to the streaming platform. Both movies were liberal in their use of violence, gore, and profanity. Reynolds and Jackman are teaming up for Deadpool 3. It won’t be a surprise if the movie is the first R-rated film in the MCU given the history of the characters involved. Daredevil: Born Again will be streaming on Disney+ in 2024. The show will start filming next spring.
