Despite interest in revisiting the project and frequent calls with Marvel, Tatum claims Disney’s acquisition of Fox ultimately swallowed up the project. Channing Tatum had a lot to say in his interview with Vanity Fair for the February cover story and Disney was caught in the crossfire. The actor and producer shared his views on the career trajectory he’s been on and how it has affected his personal life, including fatherhood, his divorce, and his new relationship with the Catwoman herself, Zoe Kravitz. Channing Tatum had a lot of good things to say about his return to the Magic Mike universe, but the picture was a lot less rosy when talking about the X-Men’s Gambit movie. “It got swallowed up into Disney by way of Marvel when they bought Fox, and ultimately I just think that the tone of the movie we wanted to make was very far from what they wanted to do or, you know, maybe they’re waiting to see how they do it with us or without us. Once Gambit went away, I was so traumatized…I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven’t been able to see any of the movies. I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.” Tatum would go on to explain how he and his producing partner, Reid Carolin, spent four years mapping out the vision for the stand-alone Gambit film. But when a studio with such monumental power enters the equation with a different vision, there’s not much you can do. He admitted to hitting up his associates at Marvel ”every once in a while” when the itch to somehow see the movie somewhere becomes a burden. Even though Disney’s vision of Gambit didn’t coincide with Channing Tatum’s, that doesn’t have to mean the door is shut. Another franchise originating from Fox production in Deadpool is making an MCU introduction through the 2024 Multiverse. If Deadpool’s mature tone is suitable for the MCU, there might be hope for Tatum’s Gambit. That is unless Marvel decides to go ahead with a younger, re-casted version of the X-Men crew, completely reshaping the MCU and setting the groundwork for their new vision to thrive.
