Now, we finally have a clue about Bungie’s next project after Destiny 2.
According to two job listings on Bungie’s Careers page, the studio is looking for an Incubation Contract Environment Artist and an Incubation Contract Level Designer. The job listing details that the former will work on an “unannounced multiplayer action game” while the latter will need to have skills and “experience working on character-focused third-person action games (platformers, isometric, etc).” Naturally, fans are busy speculating what all of this means for Bungie’s next project. Before the Destiny franchise, Bungie had mostly worked on shooters, specifically, a handful of Halo games, including the original trilogy and 2010’s Halo Reach. But, upon further digging, we found out that Bungie has worked on non-shooter titles in the past. Case in point, one of Bungie’s first games was a role-playing game for the Classic Mac Os back in 1992, Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Also, Bungie released a pair of real-time tactics video games in Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Finally, Bungie West’s only game, Oni, was a third-person action video game that was released in 2001. So, Bungie has a bit of experience with non-shooters, but it will be interesting to see what its new game will look like and which platforms it will be released on. Some fans believe that the job postings are for “Matter”, a working title for a project Bungie teased years ago that will release by 2025. In addition, Bungie mentioned before that their post-Destiny games will be “esports-ready”. This would suggest that the studio’s next project will be focused on competitive play on top of having presumed live-service elements. Ultimately, fans shouldn’t expect to hear anything about the new Bungie IP soon. As the project is still in the “incubation” stage, Bungie has done minimal work on the game and there’s a chance that Sony will cancel it. But, with Sony “confirming” that it intends to launch at least 10 live-service games by 2026, Bungie’s “unannounced multiplayer action game” could be a huge part of Sony’s plans for the PS5 down the line.
