Announced at the very end of The Mandalorian’s second season, we now have a concrete release date for the Book of Boba Fett. The new series will focus on the Mandalorian bounty hunter’s fight to take control over the organized crime network of Tatooine, filling the power vacuum left by the death of Jabba the Hutt. The last time we saw Boba, he took his place on the late Hutt’s (downsized) throne, with Fennec Shand at his side.
The series, which is taking over the place that The Mandalorian filled for two years, will debut on Disney’s streaming platform on the 29th of December, 2021, ensuring that we send off this year with some proper Star Wars content. If the consistently smashing quality of The Mandalorian rubs off on the Book of Boba Fett, we’re all in for a major treat. If anyone can bend the crooks of the outer rim to their will, Fett certainly can. His appearance in The Mandalorian showed that spending some time being digested by a Sarlacc did nothing to dull the old clone’s skills, and now the fan favorite character will be able to show off even more. We know very little about the story, but apparently the series will give insight into Boba’s past. In the extended canon of the old continuity, more or less the entire life of Boba Fett was fleshed out and depicted, leaving no gaps between his disappearance following Attack of the Clones and resurfacing as a hunter tracking Han Solo. His involvement in the Clone Wars cartoon remains canon, and the character has appeared in new, canon media, but there are still plenty of blanks to fill. Of course, new Star Wars content means a new costume redesign - how else will they sell the fans toys of Boba Fett again? The announcement poster released alongside the premiered date shows Boba perched atop the same throne we saw him on at the end of The Mandalorian’s second season, but with a minimally different outfit - he now has a new golden belt buckle, and a lot more battle damage on what was newly refurbished armor. We’ll probably learn more about the belt buckle when the Book of Boba Fett hits Disney+ on the 29th of December.
