The co-CEOs of DC are reportedly hard at work on a ten-year plan to guide the future of DC movies. This plan will incorporate all things related to the comic book franchise including TV shows and even canon video games. The vision, according to Gunn, is to tell the biggest story ever told. James Gunn’s reign as head of creatives at DC Studios got a shot in the arm last weekend when it revealed the first official movie poster for Blue Beetle. No less than Gunn himself tweeted the image after it was revealed at Brazil’s Comic-Con Experience (CCXP).
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) December 3, 2022 The Blue Beetle will be the first superhero movie in the DC Universe featuring a Latino character. Jamie Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, will be played by Xolo Maridueña. The 21-year-old actor is of Mexican, Cuban and Ecuadorian descent and will be making his film debut in the upcoming superhero film. The movie will explore how the teen discovers the alien scarab and bonds with it, giving him superhuman powers. The scarab also gives Reyes a suit of armor capable of withstanding space travel and armed with a host of high-powered weapons. Similar to the comic book, Reyes will be the third person to take on the mantle of Blue Beetle after Dan Garrett and Ted Kord. Blue Beetle was first conceptualized as an HBO Max series but shifted to a full-length feature film. This is similar to how Marvel opted for an Armor Wars movie starring Don Cheadle rather than having a TV show on Disney+. Academy Award-winner Susan Sarandon will be playing as Victoria Kord. She will serve as the antagonist for the upcoming movie. We are not yet sure what her relation is to Ted Kord, the previous Blue Beetle. Maridueña and Sarandon will be joined by Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo in the movie. Sarandon recently shared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the movie will be entirely in Spanish and have English subtitles. The actor explained that a majority of the actors and characters had Mexican heritage, so the movie had Spanish dialogue. Blue Beetle started filming in May 2022 and wrapped up in July. The movie is currently in post-production and we presume that Gunn has had some input on the editing of the movie. Blue Beetle will be coming to theaters on August 2023.
