Avatar: The Way of Water recently became last year’s highest-grossing film. The sequel has already earned over $1.5 billion at the box office to surpass Top Gun: Maverick. With its massive haul, Cameron is confident that the movie will reach its break-even target in a few days. “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron shared. “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.” “The point is we’re going to be okay,” the director adds. “I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3,’ which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic.” Avatar 3 was filmed simultaneously with Avatar: The Way of Water. Cameron is now looking at the fourth and fifth installments of the Avatar series as Avatar 2 inches closer to profitability. “And then ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written,” Cameron reveals. “We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.” The director clarified his comments regarding the $2 billion target for Avatar: The Way of Water. “I never actually gave it a number,” Cameron explained. “I said it would has to be among the highest-grossing films in history and somebody else applied that number and it got picked up. The number is actually less.” The current third highest-grossing film of all time is Titanic, another James Cameron movie. The 1997 film starring Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet earned a total of $2.187 billion during its theatrical run. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently ranked fourth all-time with a total earning of $2.06 billion. Industry experts have lowered the break-even point estimate for Avatar 2 to $1.4 billion, a number that the movie has surpassed days ago. Insiders predict that Avatar 2 will earn close to $2 billion when it’s all said and done. Whatever the final number, the second Avatar film is guaranteed to make enough profit for the sequels to happen. Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 will feature “different cultures from those I have already shown.” The director shared, “the fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.” “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples,” the director adds. “In ‘Avatar 3,’ we will do the opposite.” Avatar 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on December 20, 2024.
